Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why did Emancipation disappoint many Irish Catholics?
Model answer
Emancipation opened Parliament to a handful of wealthy Catholics while doing nothing for the poor, and the disfranchisement of the forty-shilling freeholders took away the very votes that had won it.
- 2
How strong was O'Connell's parliamentary following after the Reform Act?
Model answer
O'Connell led a group of about thirty-nine Irish members after the general election of 1832, enough to matter in a divided House of Commons but far too few to carry Repeal.
- 3
What was a tithe?
Model answer
A tithe was a compulsory payment of a tenth of agricultural produce, later commuted to money, levied for the support of the clergy of the Established Church.
- 4
Why was the tithe so bitterly resented in Ireland?
Model answer
The Church of Ireland served about an eighth of the population, so Catholics and Presbyterians alike were paying for a church they did not attend while also supporting their own clergy.
- 5
How did the Tithe War begin?
Model answer
Resistance began at Graiguenamanagh in County Kilkenny in 1830, when the parish priest refused to pay and his people followed him, and the refusal spread across Leinster and Munster.
- 6
What methods did the tithe resisters use?
Model answer
Payment was simply withheld, cattle seized for arrears were boycotted at auction so that they could not be sold, and process servers were obstructed and attacked.
