Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    How did Ford become president?

    Model answer

Ford was appointed vice-president under the Twenty-fifth Amendment when Agnew resigned, and succeeded on Nixon's resignation in 1974, so he was the only president never elected to either office.

  2. 2

Why did the pardon of Nixon damage Ford so badly?

    Model answer

Ford pardoned Nixon a month after taking office and before any charge had been brought, and many Americans suspected that a bargain had been struck.

  3. 3

What economic problem dominated the later 1970s?

    Model answer

The United States suffered stagflation, in which high inflation and rising unemployment occurred together, and the usual remedies could not treat both at once.

  4. 4

    How did Congress treat Ford?

    Model answer

Congress, with large Democratic majorities and newly confident after Watergate, overrode him repeatedly, and Ford used the veto more often than any modern president in so short a term.

  5. 5

What did the Church Committee reveal?

    Model answer

A Senate committee investigating the intelligence agencies in the mid-1970s exposed assassination plots, illegal surveillance of American citizens and secret covert operations, and permanent oversight committees were created in response.

  6. 6

Why did the fall of Saigon in 1975 matter to the presidency?

    Model answer

South Vietnam collapsed after Congress refused further aid. The collapse confirmed that a president could no longer commit the country abroad as he had done in the 1960s.
