Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe the North German Confederation.
Model answer
The North German Confederation, in force from July 1867, joined the twenty-two states north of the Main under the King of Prussia as hereditary president, with Bismarck as Chancellor answerable to the president alone.
- 2
How was the Bundesrat weighted?
Model answer
The Bundesrat was made up of delegates instructed by their state governments, and Prussia's seventeen of the forty-three votes were enough to block any change to the constitution.
- 3
What powers did the Reichstag have, and what did it lack?
Model answer
The Reichstag was elected by universal male suffrage and voted on legislation and civil expenditure, but it could not appoint or dismiss ministers and had almost no control over military spending.
- 4
Name the four German states left outside the Confederation.
Model answer
Bavaria, Württemberg, Baden and Hesse-Darmstadt remained outside, south of the river Main.
- 5
Why were the southern states reluctant to join Prussia?
Model answer
The southern states were largely Catholic, proud of their own dynasties and traditions, and suspicious of Protestant Prussia's conscription, taxation and military discipline.
- 6
Which southern state asked to join, and why was it refused?
Model answer
Baden applied for admission and was turned down, because Bismarck did not want to provoke France by crossing the Main before he was ready.
