Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why did British governments treat Repeal differently from Emancipation?
Model answer
Emancipation was a concession that could be made within the Union, while Repeal would have dismantled the United Kingdom itself, so no British party of any colour would consider it.
- 2

Model answer
Peel told the House of Commons in May 1843 that he would sooner face civil war than consent to the dismemberment of the Empire.

How did the government act against Repeal supporters in office?
Model answer
Magistrates who attended Repeal meetings were struck off the commission of the peace, some two dozen of them, and O'Connell responded by appointing his own arbitrators.
- 4
What military preparations did the government make in 1843?
Model answer
The garrison in Ireland was strengthened, artillery and cavalry were moved into position around Dublin, and an Arms Act was passed to tighten the licensing of weapons.
- 5
What was to happen at Clontarf on 8 October 1843?
Model answer
A monster meeting had been called at Clontarf outside Dublin, on the site of Brian Boru's victory, and it was expected to be the largest of the whole campaign.
- 6
How did the government stop the Clontarf meeting?
Model answer
The Lord Lieutenant issued a proclamation banning the meeting on the afternoon before it was due to be held, and troops with artillery were posted on the ground.
