Overview

Recall questions on the distinctions that must not be blurred: atom and ion, strong and concentrated, weak and dilute, rate and extent, feasible and observed.

What you need to know

Answer each one before you reveal it.

Your recallNot started
Key term

Why must atom and ion not be used interchangeably, how do strong and concentrated acids differ, and how do weak and dilute acids differ?

Process

Why is it wrong to say energy is released when bonds break, how does rate differ from extent, and how does being feasible differ from being fast?

Key term

Why should an explanation state which species is oxidised and which is reduced rather than simply calling a reaction redox?

Key term

Why is it important to use the term "amount" rather than "number" when referring to moles?

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Why must the words atom and ion not be used interchangeably in an explanation?

    Model answer

An atom is electrically neutral with equal numbers of protons and electrons, while an ion carries a charge because it has lost or gained electrons, and the two behave completely differently.

  2. 2

How do the mass, the amount and the concentration of a substance differ?

    Model answer

Mass is measured in grams, amount is the number of moles found by dividing mass by molar mass, and concentration is the amount of solute per unit volume of solution in mol dm⁻³.

  3. 3

What is the difference between a strong acid and a concentrated acid?

    Model answer

Strong describes an acid that is fully dissociated into ions in solution, while concentrated describes a large amount of acid dissolved in a given volume; a strong acid can be dilute and a weak acid can be concentrated.

  4. 4

What is the difference between a weak acid and a dilute acid?

    Model answer

Weak means only partially dissociated in solution, whereas dilute means the solution contains a small amount of acid per unit volume.

  5. 5

Why is it wrong to say that energy is released when bonds are broken?

    Model answer

Bond breaking always requires energy to be supplied and is endothermic; energy is released when new bonds form.

  6. 6

How does the rate of a reaction differ from the extent to which it proceeds?

    Model answer

Rate describes how quickly reactants are converted into products, whereas extent describes how far the reaction goes before equilibrium is reached, which is governed by the equilibrium constant.
