The Ozone Story
Ozone depletion by haloalkanes
- 4 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on what a CFC is, its photodissociation, the two-step catalytic cycle, and why an HCFC was an improvement.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What are the two steps by which a chlorine radical destroys ozone, what is their overall equation, and why is it called catalysis?
Why is ozone loss out of proportion to the CFC released, how do the carbon–halogen bonds rank for ease of photodissociation, and why is an HCFC an improvement on a CFC?
Why has the ozone layer begun to recover?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What are CFCs?
Model answer
CFCs are chlorofluorocarbons: haloalkanes in which every hydrogen has been replaced by chlorine or fluorine.
- 2
Which properties made CFCs so useful?
Model answer
They are unreactive, non-flammable, non-toxic and easily liquefied, which suited them to use as refrigerants, aerosol propellants and foam-blowing agents.
- 3
Why is the unreactivity of CFCs the very thing that causes the problem?
Model answer
Nothing in the troposphere destroys them, so they survive for decades and drift slowly up into the stratosphere.
- 4
What destroys a CFC molecule once it reaches the stratosphere?
Model answer
High-energy ultraviolet radiation, which is not filtered out at that altitude and breaks a bond homolytically.
- 5
Which bond in CF₂Cl₂ is broken by that radiation, and why that one?
Model answer
The C–Cl bond, because at 346 kJ mol⁻¹ it is much weaker than the C–F bond at 467 kJ mol⁻¹ and so is broken by the ultraviolet photons available.
- 6
Write the equation for the photodissociation of CF₂Cl₂.
Model answer
CF₂Cl₂ → •CF₂Cl + •Cl.
