Recording, processing and judging data
- 3 things to know
- Components 01 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on what a complete record contains, using a spreadsheet to process results, primary against secondary data, and judging a source.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why should a fitted line from a spreadsheet still be checked against the plotted points?
What is the difference between primary and secondary data?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
You are given an unfamiliar solid and asked to design a way of finding its concentration in solution. What must you establish first?
Model answer
You must find out whether it dissolves in the chosen solvent and roughly how much dissolves, since the solution prepared cannot be more concentrated than the solubility allows.
- 2
How can you check that a precipitation reaction has gone to completion?
Model answer
Add a further small portion of the precipitating reagent to the filtrate; if no more precipitate forms, the reaction is complete.
- 3
Why is a written method read all the way through before any apparatus is assembled?
Model answer
Later steps often determine how earlier ones must be done, and reading ahead reveals the apparatus, quantities and safety precautions that must be ready before starting.
- 4
Why must readings be written down at the moment they are taken?
Model answer
Recording immediately prevents transcription errors and forgotten digits, and keeps the raw data available even if the processed value is later found to be wrong.
- 5
What details should be recorded when a precipitate forms during a test?
Model answer
The colour and nature of the precipitate should be recorded, together with what happens when excess reagent is added, since some precipitates redissolve.
- 6
What should a complete record of an experiment contain?
Model answer
It should contain the date, the method followed, the exact quantities and concentrations used, all raw readings with their units, the observations made and any deviations from the planned method.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Development of Practical Skills in Chemistry, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
