Cracking and how it is carried out
- 1 thing to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on why cracking matters to the oil industry, why a product must be unsaturated, and how a hydrocarbon is cracked in the laboratory.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by cracking?
Model answer
It is the breaking of long-chain hydrocarbon molecules into shorter, more useful ones.
- 2
Why is cracking so important in the oil industry?
Model answer
Crude oil yields far more long-chain material than is wanted and too little of the short-chain fractions such as petrol, and cracking also supplies the alkenes needed for making polymers.
- 3
Why must at least one of the products of cracking an alkane be unsaturated?
Model answer
The original molecule does not contain enough hydrogen atoms for every fragment to be a saturated alkane.
- 4
Write an equation for the cracking of decane into octane and one other product.
Model answer
C₁₀H₂₂ → C₈H₁₈ + C₂H₄.
- 5
What does the catalyst achieve in an industrial cracking process?
Model answer
It allows cracking to be carried out at a lower temperature and pressure than would otherwise be needed, saving energy, and it influences which products are formed.
- 6
Describe how a hydrocarbon can be cracked in the laboratory.
Model answer
Soak mineral wool in liquid paraffin at the closed end of a hard-glass tube, pack a solid catalyst in the middle, heat the catalyst strongly while warming the paraffin so its vapour passes over it, and collect the gaseous product over water.

Every question in Developing Fuels, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
