Bond enthalpies
- 4 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on why bond enthalpies are averages, whether breaking and making release or absorb energy, and calculating ΔH from them.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
In terms of bonds, what makes a reaction exothermic, and how does bond enthalpy relate to bond length and bond order?
Which is shorter, a C–C or a C=C bond, what do bond enthalpies of 347 and 612 kJ mol⁻¹ show about the π bond, and why do bond enthalpy calculations strictly apply only to gases?
Why does almost every reaction need some energy supplied before it will start?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define average bond enthalpy.
Model answer
It is the energy needed to break one mole of a particular type of bond in gaseous molecules, averaged over a range of different compounds containing that bond.
- 2
Why does the definition of bond enthalpy use the word average?
Model answer
The same type of bond has a slightly different strength in different molecules and different environments, so the tabulated figure is a mean of many values.
- 3
Is bond breaking exothermic or endothermic?
Model answer
Bond breaking is endothermic, because energy has to be supplied to pull the bonded atoms apart.
- 4
Is bond making exothermic or endothermic?
Model answer
Bond making is exothermic, because energy is released as the new bond forms.
- 5
Why are all bond enthalpy values positive?
Model answer
They all refer to bond breaking, which always requires energy to be put in.
- 6
Give the relationship used to calculate an enthalpy change from bond enthalpies.
Model answer
ΔH is the sum of the bond enthalpies of the bonds broken minus the sum of the bond enthalpies of the bonds made.
