Classifying organic reactions and unfamiliar mechanisms
- 1 thing to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on naming a reaction type from what happens, and on working through a mechanism that has not been met before.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define an addition reaction.
Model answer
A reaction in which two molecules combine to form one product, with nothing being lost.
- 2
What is always lost from the reactant molecule in an elimination, and what feature appears in the product?
Model answer
A small molecule such as water or a hydrogen halide is lost, and a carbon–carbon double bond appears in the product.
- 3
What distinguishes a substitution from an addition reaction?
Model answer
In a substitution an atom or group in the molecule is replaced by a different one, so a group leaves as well as joining; in an addition, atoms are added across a multiple bond and nothing leaves.
- 4
Define a condensation reaction.
Model answer
A reaction in which two molecules join together with the loss of a small molecule, usually water.
- 5
Define hydrolysis.
Model answer
A reaction in which a molecule is split apart by water, often with acid or alkali as catalyst.
- 6
What does oxidation mean for an organic molecule?
Model answer
The molecule gains oxygen or loses hydrogen.

Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Colour by Design, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
