Further interpretation of mass spectra
- 4 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on accurate mass and why it separates compounds of the same nominal mass, and identifying fragments lost from a molecular ion.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why must an accurate mass be quoted to four decimal places, and what is lost to give peaks at 138 and 120 from 180?
Why can a mass difference alone sometimes not identify the group lost with certainty?
How can a series of mass differences help build up a structure?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What extra information does a high-resolution mass measurement give that a whole-number mass cannot?
Model answer
It gives the mass of the molecular ion to four decimal places, which is unique to one molecular formula even when several formulae share the same whole-number mass.
- 2
Why do compounds with the same whole-number relative molecular mass have different accurate masses?
Model answer
The accurate masses of individual atoms are not exact whole numbers, so different combinations of atoms add up to slightly different totals.
- 3
Which atom is used as the standard for accurate mass, and what value is it given?
Model answer
The carbon-12 atom, which is defined as exactly 12.0000.
- 4
Using ¹H = 1.0078, ¹²C = 12.0000 and ¹⁶O = 15.9949, calculate the accurate mass of the M⁺ peak for C₂H₄O₂.
Model answer
The accurate mass is 60.0210, from 24.0000 + 4.0312 + 31.9898.
- 5
Using the same accurate masses, calculate the value expected for C₃H₈O.
Model answer
The value is 60.0573, from 36.0000 + 8.0624 + 15.9949.
- 6
A compound gives a high-resolution M⁺ at m/z 60.0210. State which of C₂H₄O₂ and C₃H₈O it must be, and why.
Model answer
It must be C₂H₄O₂, because that formula gives 60.0210 whereas C₃H₈O would give 60.0573.
