Developing Fuels
The pollutants from burning fuels and their effects
- 2 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on particulates, unburnt hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and the oxides of nitrogen and sulfur, and the effects of each.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What are the equations for nitrogen monoxide forming in an engine, and where do the oxides of sulfur come from?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name the main pollutants released when hydrocarbon fuels are burned in an engine.
Model answer
Particulates, unburnt hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxides of nitrogen and oxides of sulfur.
- 2
What are particulates?
Model answer
Very small solid particles, largely carbon and unburnt fuel, carried along in the exhaust gases.
- 3
How are particulates formed?
Model answer
By incomplete combustion of a hydrocarbon where the oxygen supply is insufficient, which is especially common in diesel engines.
- 4
Give two harmful effects of particulates.
Model answer
They are drawn deep into the lungs and worsen respiratory and heart disease, and they blacken and erode the surfaces of buildings.
- 5
How do unburnt hydrocarbons end up in exhaust gases?
Model answer
Some fuel passes right through the engine without burning, and some evaporates from the fuel system without ever reaching the cylinder.
- 6
Why are unburnt hydrocarbons a problem in the atmosphere?
Model answer
In sunlight they react with oxides of nitrogen to form photochemical smog and ozone at ground level, and some of them are harmful to health.
