Developing Fuels

Addition of bromine and hydrogen halides, and the test for unsaturation

  • 2 things to know
  • Components 01, 02 and 03

Overview

Recall questions on why a C=C bond is reactive, the bromine water test and what it shows, and the products with a hydrogen halide.

What you need to know

Answer each one before you reveal it.

Your recallNot started
Numbers

Why is a C=C bond more reactive than a C–C bond, what do bond enthalpies of 347 and 612 kJ mol⁻¹ show about the double bond, and what is the equation for ethene with bromine?

Numbers

What is seen when bromine water is shaken with an alkane, why does the test still work on a molecule with several functional groups, and what is the equation for ethene with hydrogen bromide?

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is an addition reaction?

    Model answer

A reaction in which two molecules combine to form a single product, with a double bond becoming a single bond.

  2. 2

Why is a C=C bond more reactive than a C–C bond?

    Model answer

The π bond holds exposed electron density above and below the plane of the molecule and is weaker than a σ bond, so it is readily attacked and broken.

  3. 3

Given a C–C bond enthalpy of 347 kJ mol⁻¹ and a C=C bond enthalpy of 612 kJ mol⁻¹, explain what this tells you about the double bond.

    Model answer

The double bond is worth only 265 kJ mol⁻¹ more than the single bond, so its second component is considerably weaker and breaks more readily.

  4. 4

Write the equation for the reaction of ethene with bromine.

    Model answer

    C₂H₄ + Br₂ → CH₂BrCH₂Br.

  5. 5

Name the product formed when bromine adds to ethene.

    Model answer

    It is 1,2-dibromoethane.

  6. 6

What conditions are needed for bromine to add to an alkene?

    Model answer

None beyond room temperature; the reaction happens rapidly as soon as the two are mixed.
