Gas volume calculations and measuring a gas in the laboratory
- 2 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on finding a volume or an amount from pV = nRT, reading volume ratios off an equation, and why a measured volume comes out low.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why might a measured gas volume come out low, to how many significant figures should an amount from a 48 cm³ syringe reading be quoted, and what happens to a gas volume if its kelvin temperature doubles?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Rearrange the ideal gas equation to make temperature the subject.
Model answer
Rearranging gives T = pV ÷ nR.
- 2
A gas syringe holds 96.0 cm³ of a gas of mass 0.176 g at 101 kPa and 293 K. Calculate the molar mass of the gas.
Model answer
n = pV ÷ RT = (101 000 × 9.60 × 10⁻⁵) ÷ (8.314 × 293) = 3.98 × 10⁻³ mol, so M = 0.176 ÷ (3.98 × 10⁻³) = 44.2 g mol⁻¹.
- 3
0.243 g of magnesium is added to excess hydrochloric acid. Calculate the volume of hydrogen produced at RTP.
Model answer
n(Mg) = 0.243 ÷ 24.3 = 0.0100 mol, and Mg + 2HCl → MgCl₂ + H₂ gives one mole of hydrogen per mole of magnesium, so V = 0.0100 × 24.0 = 0.240 dm³, or 240 cm³.
- 4
What volume of oxygen, measured at RTP, is needed to burn 100 cm³ of methane completely at RTP?
Model answer
CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O requires twice the volume of oxygen, which is 200 cm³.
- 5
Why can the volume ratio of reacting gases be read directly from a balanced equation?
Model answer
Equal volumes of gases at the same temperature and pressure contain equal numbers of molecules, so the volumes are in the same ratio as the amounts in moles.
- 6
Name two pieces of apparatus used to measure the volume of a gas given off in a reaction.
Model answer
A gas syringe, or an inverted measuring cylinder filled with water standing in a trough.
