What a buffer is and how it resists a change in pH
- 2 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on the two components, the two ways of preparing one, and what happens when acid or alkali is added.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State the expression used to find [H⁺] in an acidic buffer.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a buffer solution?
Model answer
It is a solution that resists changes in pH when small amounts of acid or alkali are added, or when it is diluted.
- 2
Which two components make up an acidic buffer solution?
Model answer
A weak acid and a soluble salt of that acid, which supplies its conjugate base.
- 3
What are two ways of preparing a buffer based on ethanoic acid?
Model answer
Dissolve sodium ethanoate in a solution of ethanoic acid, or partially neutralise ethanoic acid with a measured amount of sodium hydroxide.
- 4
Why is the salt regarded as fully dissociated in the buffer?
Model answer
It is an ionic solid, so it dissolves to give its ions completely, providing a large reservoir of the conjugate base.
- 5
Which component deals with added acid, and which with added alkali?
Model answer
The conjugate base removes added H⁺, and the weak acid removes added OH⁻.
- 6
Write the equation for what happens in an ethanoate buffer when a little acid is added.
Model answer
CH₃COO⁻(aq) + H⁺(aq) → CH₃COOH(aq).
