Ion charges, the common polyatomic ions and writing formulae
- 2 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on deducing an ion's charge from its block, the formulae of the common polyatomic ions, and building a neutral formula.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is the formula of ammonium carbonate?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How does an element's position in the s- or p-block tell you the charge on its ion?
Model answer
Group 1 forms 1+ ions and Group 2 forms 2+ ions by losing their outer electrons, while Group 6 forms 2− ions and Group 7 forms 1− ions by gaining electrons, so the charge follows from how many electrons must be moved to reach a full outer shell.
- 2
What are the formulae of the nitrate, sulfate and carbonate ions?
Model answer
They are NO₃⁻, SO₄²⁻ and CO₃²⁻.
- 3
What are the formulae of the hydroxide, hydrogencarbonate and ammonium ions?
Model answer
They are OH⁻, HCO₃⁻ and NH₄⁺.
- 4
What charge does each of the copper, zinc and lead ions carry?
Model answer
Copper forms Cu²⁺, zinc forms Zn²⁺ and lead forms Pb²⁺.
- 5
Iron forms two common ions — what are their formulae and names?
Model answer
Fe²⁺ is the iron(II) ion and Fe³⁺ is the iron(III) ion.
- 6
What is the formula of iron(III) sulfate?
Model answer
Two Fe³⁺ ions give 6+ and three SO₄²⁻ ions give 6−, so the formula is Fe₂(SO₄)₃.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Elements of Life, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
