Displayed, shortened and skeletal formulae
- 1 thing to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on what each kind of formula shows, reading a skeletal formula, and choosing which to use.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does a full, displayed structural formula show?
Model answer
Every atom in the molecule and every bond between those atoms.
- 2
What is a shortened structural formula?
Model answer
One that lists the atoms attached to each carbon in order along the chain, such as CH₃CH₂CH₂OH, without drawing the bonds in.
- 3
What is a skeletal formula?
Model answer
One in which the carbon skeleton is drawn as a zig-zag of lines, with carbon atoms understood at the ends and junctions, hydrogens on carbon left out, and functional groups written in.
- 4
In a skeletal formula, what does the end of a line stand for?
Model answer
A carbon atom, carrying however many hydrogen atoms are needed to give it four bonds.
- 5
Why are skeletal formulae useful for large molecules?
Model answer
They are quick to draw and make the carbon framework and the functional groups easy to pick out without a clutter of hydrogen atoms.
- 6
When is a displayed formula the better choice?
Model answer
When every bond matters, for instance when setting out a reaction mechanism or distinguishing between isomers.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Developing Fuels, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
