PAG7 to PAG12: electrochemistry, rates and pH
- 3 things to know
- Components 01 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on the electrochemical cell experiment, continuous monitoring and initial rates, Arrhenius plots, and distinguishing acids by pH.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How can pH measurement alone distinguish 0.10 mol dm⁻³ hydrochloric acid from 0.10 mol dm⁻³ ethanoic acid?
Doubling the concentration of reactant A in an initial rates experiment makes the initial rate four times greater. State the order with respect to A.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
In an electrochemical cell experiment, what happens to the cell potential when the concentration of the metal ion in one half-cell is increased, and why?
Model answer
Increasing the concentration of the metal ions shifts the position of that electrode equilibrium towards the metal, making that electrode less negative and changing the measured cell potential accordingly.
- 2
A reaction is followed by continuous monitoring and the concentration halves in the same time interval each time. What does this show?
Model answer
A constant half-life shows that the reaction is first order with respect to that reactant.
- 3
A first-order reaction has a half-life of 120 s. What is its rate constant?
Model answer
k = ln 2 ÷ t½ = 0.693 ÷ 120 = 5.78 × 10⁻³ s⁻¹.
- 4
In an initial rates experiment, how is the order with respect to a reactant found?
Model answer
The concentration of that reactant is doubled while all others are held constant, and the factor by which the initial rate changes shows the order: no change means zero order, a doubling of the rate means first order, and a quadrupling means second order.
- 5
Doubling the concentration of reactant A in an initial rates experiment makes the initial rate four times greater. State the order with respect to A.
Model answer
The reaction is second order with respect to A.
- 6
An Arrhenius plot of ln k against 1/T has a gradient of −6.50 × 10³ K. Calculate the activation energy, using R = 8.314 J mol⁻¹ K⁻¹.
Model answer
Eₐ = −gradient × R = 6.50 × 10³ × 8.314 = 5.40 × 10⁴ J mol⁻¹, which is 54.0 kJ mol⁻¹.
