Naming and comparing the stereoisomers
- 2 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on naming the stereoisomers of but-2-ene and 1,2-dichloroethene, and why their melting and boiling points differ.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain the difference between structural isomers and stereoisomers.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name the two stereoisomers of but-2-ene.
Model answer
They are cis-but-2-ene and trans-but-2-ene, which may equally be called Z-but-2-ene and E-but-2-ene.
- 2
Where are the methyl groups in cis-but-2-ene?
Model answer
Both lie on the same side of the C=C double bond.
- 3
Name the two stereoisomers of 1,2-dichloroethene.
Model answer
cis-1,2-dichloroethene and trans-1,2-dichloroethene.
- 4
Why does cis-1,2-dichloroethene boil at 60 °C while the trans isomer boils at 48 °C?
Model answer
In the cis isomer the two C–Cl bond dipoles reinforce one another, giving the molecule a permanent dipole and stronger intermolecular forces, whereas in the trans isomer they point in opposite directions and cancel.
- 5
Why does the trans isomer of a compound often melt at a higher temperature than the cis isomer?
Model answer
Its molecules are more symmetrical and pack more regularly into the solid, so more energy is needed to break the lattice apart.
- 6
How can one stereoisomer be converted into the other?
Model answer
Only by supplying enough energy, such as strong heating or ultraviolet light, to break the π bond so that rotation becomes possible.
