Condensation polymerisation

  • 3 things to know
  • Components 01, 02 and 03

Overview

Recall questions on what is eliminated, which monomer pairs give a polyester and which a polyamide, and deducing a repeat unit or the monomers.

What you need to know

Answer each one before you reveal it.

Key term

How can you tell from the repeat unit that a polymer is a polyamide rather than a polyester?

Key term

Why do many condensation polymers slowly weaken in a damp environment?

Key term

Compare the mass of the repeat unit with the mass of the monomers in each type of polymerisation.

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Define condensation polymerisation.

    Model answer

It is the joining of many monomer molecules into a long chain with the loss of a small molecule, such as water, at each new link.

  2. 2

Which type of polymerisation forms no second product, and why does that follow from the monomer it uses?

    Model answer

Addition polymerisation; its monomers are unsaturated, so they join by opening the C=C double bond and no atoms are left over.

  3. 3

State two differences between addition and condensation polymerisation.

    Model answer

Condensation loses a small molecule at each link whereas addition loses nothing, and condensation monomers need two functional groups whereas addition monomers need a carbon–carbon double bond.

  4. 4

Why must a monomer used in condensation polymerisation have two functional groups?

    Model answer

It has to join to a neighbour at each end, so a monomer with only one group would stop the chain from growing.

  5. 5

Compare the mass of the repeat unit with the mass of the monomers in each type of polymerisation.

    Model answer

In addition polymerisation the repeat unit has the same mass as the monomer, but in condensation polymerisation it is lighter by the mass of the small molecule lost.

  6. 6

Which two functional groups combine to make a polyamide?

    Model answer

A carboxyl group and an amino group.
