  1. 1

What was FW de Klerk’s part in the ending of apartheid?

    Model answer

Becoming National Party leader in 1989 and then State President, he judged that white rule could not last, chose negotiation, and carried his party and a two-thirds majority of white voters with him in the 1992 referendum.

  2. 2

What was Cyril Ramaphosa’s part in the ending of apartheid?

    Model answer

He built the National Union of Mineworkers into the country’s most powerful union in the 1980s, then as secretary-general became the movement’s chief negotiator, facing Roelf Meyer across the table.

  3. 3

What was Nelson Mandela’s part in the ending of apartheid?

    Model answer

From prison he opened contact with ministers while refusing freedom on conditions, and after 1990 his authority held the movement to negotiation through years of violence that might otherwise have wrecked it.

  4. 4

How did talks start while Mandela was still a prisoner?

    Model answer

Through secret contacts from 1985 with the justice minister Kobie Coetsee and a government committee, leading to a meeting with PW Botha in July 1989 and with FW de Klerk that December.

  5. 5

What was CODESA, and why did it break down?

    Model answer

The Convention for a Democratic South Africa, which first met in December 1991 with delegates from nineteen parties; it collapsed in May 1992 when the two main sides could not agree what majority should be needed to settle a new constitution.

  6. 6

How did violence affect the bargaining in 1992 and 1993?

    Model answer

The Boipatong massacre of June 1992 drove the African National Congress to walk out, and the murder of Chris Hani in April 1993 brought the country close to open revolt, yet each crisis pushed the parties back to the table and finally fixed an election date.
