Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How does the arrival of migrants change the economy of a town?
Model answer
It supplies labour to industries short of workers, adds new businesses, trades and skills, and brings in rent, rates and custom, though wages can be undercut where work is scarce.
- 2
What does migration do to a town’s population and to the services it needs?
Model answer
The population grows and gets younger, pressing on housing, schools and hospitals, and new schools, welfare bodies and voluntary societies are founded to meet the need.
- 3
How can a settled immigrant community come to exert political influence locally?
Model answer
The group forms campaigning organisations, presses the council over housing, policing and schools, and in time puts up its own candidates and elects councillors.
- 4
In what ways does migration change everyday culture in the streets of a town?
Model answer
New places of worship, food shops and restaurants, festivals, music, sport, dress and languages become part of ordinary life for everyone living there.
- 5
What is succession in an immigrant district?
Model answer
An established group moves out to the suburbs and the same cheap housing, shops and halls pass to the newest arrivals, who repeat the process.
- 6
Why does a district keep changing even after new arrivals have stopped coming?
Model answer
The children and grandchildren born there move into different work and different housing, so the group spreads across the town instead of staying in one quarter.
