Marxist and critical theories of crime
- 2 things to know
- Paper 3
Overview
Criminogenic capitalism, selective law enforcement, the ideological functions of crime, and critical criminology.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What ideological functions do Marxists argue crime and its control perform?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What do Marxists mean when they say capitalism is criminogenic?
Model answer
That capitalism by its very nature causes crime: poverty and inequality can make crime the only means of survival, while the emphasis on consumption, competition and greed encourages crime at all levels of society, including among the wealthy.
- 2
According to Marxists, whose interests does the law mainly serve?
Model answer
The interests of the ruling class. Laws largely protect private property and capitalist interests (Chambliss), while many of the harmful acts of the powerful are not defined as criminal at all.
- 3
How do Marxists explain selective law enforcement?
Model answer
The criminal justice system applies the law unequally: the crimes of the working class are heavily policed and punished, whereas the corporate and white-collar crimes of the powerful are under-enforced and frequently go unpunished.
- 4
What ideological functions do Marxists argue crime and its control perform?
Model answer
They divert attention from the exploitation built into capitalism, framing crime as the fault of a few 'bad' individuals, making the working class appear to be the criminal class, and sustaining the illusion that the law protects everyone equally.
- 5
How do Marxists view corporate crime?
Model answer
As widespread and hugely costly, both financially and physically, yet largely invisible and under-punished, because the powerful can shape the law and avoid the criminal label, reinforcing selective enforcement.
- 6
Give one criticism of the traditional Marxist theory of crime.
Model answer
It largely ignores non-class inequalities such as gender and ethnicity, over-predicts working-class crime, and cannot easily explain crime in non-capitalist societies or crime that is not economically motivated.
