Comparing the Five Approaches
Comparison of the five approaches: Nature-nurture debate, Reductionism and holism
- 2 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
Recall questions on Nature-nurture debate, Reductionism and holism.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How is an appreciation of developmental psychology gained through the five approaches?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Which of the five classic studies permit conclusions about cause and effect, and why?
Model answer
Only Watson and Rayner (1920) and Loftus and Palmer (1974), because they are the only two that manipulated an independent variable under controlled conditions; the other three measured variables as they already stood.
- 2
Classify the research method used in each of the five classic studies.
Model answer
Raine, Buchsbaum and LaCasse (1997) ran a matched-pairs quasi-experiment using brain imaging, Bowlby (1944) used retrospective interviews and case studies with a matched clinical comparison group, Watson and Rayner (1920) conducted a controlled laboratory experiment on a single infant, Loftus and Palmer (1974) ran laboratory experiments with an independent groups design, and Myers and Diener (1995) wrote a review of existing survey data.
- 3
Why can neither Raine's nor Bowlby's classic study establish a cause?
Model answer
In both, the grouping variable already existed and could not be allocated, so being a murderer or a thief was not created by the researcher and any number of uncontrolled differences between the groups could explain the results.
- 4
How does the evidence in Myers and Diener (1995) differ in kind from the other four classic studies?
Model answer
It is the only one that collected no new data, being a secondary review of surveys already published, so it contributes breadth of population evidence rather than a controlled test of a single hypothesis.
- 5
Compare the five classic studies for sample size and generalisability.
Model answer
They range from a single infant in Watson and Rayner, through Bowlby's clinic sample and Raine's group of offenders and matched controls, to Loftus and Palmer's student volunteers, up to the many thousands of respondents across many nations reviewed by Myers and Diener, so population validity is lowest in the behaviourist study and highest in the positive one.
- 6
Compare the objectivity of the data produced by the five classic studies.
Model answer
Raine's brain scan measurements are the most objective, Loftus and Palmer's speed estimates and Watson and Rayner's recorded distress reactions are quantifiable but rely on observers, Bowlby's diagnoses were made by the researcher himself and are the most open to bias, and Myers and Diener depend entirely on respondents' self-reports of their own happiness.
