Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is content analysis?

    Model answer

It is a method for studying communication indirectly, in which material such as newspaper articles, television programmes, diaries, adverts or on-line posts is analysed against coding categories agreed in advance and the occurrences of each category are counted.

  2. 2

Give one strength and one weakness of content analysis.

    Model answer

It uses material that already exists, so there are few ethical problems and no participant reactivity, but deciding which category a piece of content belongs to is subjective and may reflect the researcher's own bias.

  3. 3

What is a structured interview or questionnaire?

    Model answer

It asks every respondent the same fixed set of questions, in the same order, usually with closed response options.

  4. 4

What is a semi-structured interview, and how does the data it yields differ?

    Model answer

It works from a list of topics but lets the interviewer follow up interesting answers with unplanned questions, so it produces richer qualitative detail than the easily compared numerical data of a structured interview.

  5. 5

Give one strength and one weakness of the structured interview.

    Model answer

Because everyone is asked exactly the same questions the data is easy to compare and the interview is easy to replicate, but the fixed format cannot follow up unexpected answers and may miss the reason behind a response.

  6. 6

    What is a correlational study?

    Model answer

It is a study that measures two co-variables in the same participants and tests whether they vary together, without manipulating either.
