Application of research methods to a novel scenario
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Recall questions on Application of research methods to a novel scenario.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What should you identify first when reading an unfamiliar study?
How do you identify the independent and dependent variables from a written description?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a novel research scenario?
Model answer
It is a description of an unfamiliar study you have not met before, which must be analysed and evaluated using your general knowledge of research methods.
- 2
What should you identify first when reading an unfamiliar study?
Model answer
The method used, what was manipulated or measured, who the participants were and how they were obtained, and how the data were analysed.
- 3
How do you identify the independent and dependent variables from a written description?
Model answer
The independent variable is what the researcher deliberately changed or used to divide the participants, and the dependent variable is whatever was measured as an outcome.
- 4
How do you tell from a description which experimental design was used?
Model answer
If every participant took part in every condition it is repeated measures; if separate people were used in each condition it is independent groups; if participants were paired on a relevant characteristic first it is matched pairs.
- 5
How do you work out the level of measurement of the data in an unfamiliar study?
Model answer
Look at what was recorded: counts in categories are nominal, rankings or subjective ratings are ordinal, and measurements on a scale with equal units are interval or ratio.
- 6
Having read a scenario, how do you decide which inferential test the researcher should use?
Model answer
Establish whether a difference or a relationship is being tested, whether the design is related or unrelated, and what level of measurement was obtained, then apply the standard selection rules.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Personal Investigations and Novel Research Scenarios, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
