Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is an ethical issue in psychological research?
Model answer
It is a conflict between the researcher's need to produce valuable, valid research and the participants' rights to be treated properly.
- 2
Define confidentiality.
Model answer
Confidentiality is the participant's right to have the data they provide protected, so that they cannot be identified from anything that is stored or published.
- 3
State three practical ways of protecting confidentiality.
Model answer
Refer to participants by number or pseudonym rather than name, store the data securely with identifying details kept separately, and report results as group findings rather than individual cases.
- 4
Distinguish confidentiality from privacy.
Model answer
Privacy is the right not to have personal information intruded upon in the first place, whereas confidentiality concerns how information is handled once a participant has given it.
- 5
Define deception in research.
Model answer
Deception is deliberately misleading participants about the nature or purpose of the study, or withholding information they would need to make an informed decision.
- 6
Why do researchers sometimes use deception?
Model answer
Because telling participants the true aim would produce demand characteristics and make the behaviour under study impossible to observe naturally.
