Descriptive statistics: Measures of central tendency
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Recall questions on Descriptive statistics: Measures of central tendency.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Calculate the mean of the scores 7, 9, 12, 14 and 18.
How is the median found?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a measure of central tendency?
Model answer
It is a single value that summarises a data set by representing the typical or average score.
- 2
State the formula for the mean.
Model answer
The mean is x̄ = Σx / n, the sum of all the scores divided by the number of scores.
- 3
Calculate the mean of the scores 7, 9, 12, 14 and 18.
Model answer
The scores total 60 and there are 5 of them, so the mean is 12.
- 4
How is the median found?
Model answer
The scores are placed in order of size and the middle value is taken; with an even number of scores the two middle values are averaged.
- 5
Find the median of 4, 6, 9, 11, 15 and 16.
Model answer
The two middle scores are 9 and 11, so the median is 10.
- 6
Find the mode of 3, 5, 5, 7, 8, 9, 9, 9 and 12.
Model answer
The mode is 9, because it occurs three times and no other score occurs as often.
