Participants and sampling: Target populations, Sampling frames and Opportunity sampling
- 1 thing to know
- Component 2
Overview
Recall questions on Target populations, Sampling frames and Opportunity sampling.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a target population?
Model answer
It is the whole group of people the researcher is interested in and to whom they wish to apply their findings.
- 2
What is a sampling frame?
Model answer
It is the actual list of the members of the target population from which the sample is drawn, such as a school roll or a membership register.
- 3
Why does an incomplete sampling frame threaten a study?
Model answer
Anyone missing from the list has no chance of being selected, so the sample is biased before selection even begins and the findings cannot be generalised to the whole target population.
- 4
What makes a sample representative, and why does it matter?
Model answer
A representative sample reflects the important characteristics of the target population in the same proportions, which is what allows the findings to be generalised beyond the people actually tested.
- 5
How is a random sample obtained?
Model answer
Every member of the sampling frame is given an equal chance of selection, for example by numbering the whole list and using a random number generator or lottery method to pick the required number.
- 6
Give one strength and one weakness of random sampling.
Model answer
It is free from researcher bias and is the most likely method to produce a representative sample, but it requires a complete list of the population and by chance can still yield an unrepresentative group.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Planning Psychological Research, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
