Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Why is the scientific status of psychology controversial?

    Model answer

Because psychology is not one enterprise: its approaches use radically different methods and assumptions, and there is no settled agreement on what a discipline must do to count as a science.

  2. 2

Name six features usually said to characterise a science.

    Model answer

Objectivity, empirical evidence, control of variables, replicability, falsifiability and theory construction leading to testable hypotheses.

  3. 3

What did Popper mean by falsifiability?

    Model answer

A theory is scientific only if it makes predictions that could in principle be shown to be false; science advances by attempting to refute theories rather than by collecting confirmations of them.

  4. 4

Why did Popper regard psychodynamic theory as unscientific?

    Model answer

He argued it could accommodate any outcome after the event, so no observation could count as evidence against it, which makes it appear endlessly confirmed rather than genuinely tested.

  5. 5

What counter-argument is made against Popper's dismissal of psychodynamic theory?

    Model answer

Kline (1988) and others argue that specific psychodynamic claims, such as the operation of particular defence mechanisms or unconscious influences on behaviour, can be operationalised and tested, and that the theory as a whole should not be rejected because some of its parts are vague.

  6. 6

What is a paradigm, in Kuhn's sense?

    Model answer

A shared framework of assumptions, accepted methods and model examples of good work that the members of a mature science hold in common and work within.
