Participants and sampling: Systematic sampling, Stratified sampling and Quota sampling
- 1 thing to know
- Component 2
Overview
Recall questions on Systematic sampling, Stratified sampling and Quota sampling.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is systematic sampling?
Model answer
It means selecting every nth person from the sampling frame, working through the list at a fixed interval.
- 2
A researcher has a list of 200 employees and wants a sample of 20. Explain how they would select it systematically.
Model answer
They would divide 200 by 20 to get a sampling interval of 10, choose a random starting point within the first ten names, and then take every tenth person from that point onwards.
- 3
Give one strength and one weakness of systematic sampling.
Model answer
It removes researcher bias from the selection and is simple to apply, but if the list has a repeating pattern that matches the interval the sample can be systematically skewed.
- 4
What is stratified sampling?
Model answer
The target population is divided into subgroups, or strata, that share a relevant characteristic, and participants are then selected randomly from each stratum in proportion to its size in the population.
- 5
A school has 500 students, 300 female and 200 male, and a stratified sample of 50 is needed. How many of each should be selected?
Model answer
Thirty female students and twenty male students should be selected, because females make up 0.6 of the population and males 0.4, giving 0.6 × 50 = 30 and 0.4 × 50 = 20.
- 6
Give one strength and one weakness of stratified sampling.
Model answer
It is the most likely method to produce a sample that mirrors the population on the chosen characteristics, but it is time-consuming and can only reflect the strata the researcher thought to identify.
