Momentum, impact and impulse
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Momentum and its unit with a worked rugby example, impulse as a vector with a worked sprint start, impulse and momentum, force–time graphs for a sprinter, landing safely and impact.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What do force–time graphs show for a sprinter at the start and at constant velocity?
What is momentum?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is momentum?
Model answer
Momentum is the quantity of motion a body has. Momentum equals mass multiplied by velocity.
- 2
What is the unit of momentum?
Model answer
Momentum is measured in kilogram metres per second (kg m s⁻¹).
- 3
A 90 kg rugby player runs at 7 m s⁻¹. What is the player's momentum?
Model answer
The momentum is 630 kg m s⁻¹. The working is 90 kg × 7 m s⁻¹ = 630 kg m s⁻¹.
- 4
Why is a heavy, fast-moving player hard to stop?
Model answer
A heavy, fast player has large momentum. A large force or impulse is needed to change it.
- 5
What is impulse?
Model answer
Impulse is force multiplied by the time for which it acts. Impulse is measured in newton seconds (N s).
- 6
Why is impulse a vector quantity?
Model answer
Impulse has both size and direction. The direction is that of the force applied.
