- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview

What is a mesocycle?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is periodisation?
Model answer
Periodisation is the division of the training year into cycles and phases with specific aims. The performer can then peak at the right time for major competitions.
- 2
What is a macrocycle?
Model answer
A macrocycle is the long-term training plan leading to a major goal. A macrocycle often covers a year, or four years for an Olympic athlete.
- 3
What is a mesocycle?
Model answer
A mesocycle is a block of training, often about four to six weeks, with a specific focus. A block building aerobic endurance is an example.
- 4
What is a microcycle?
Model answer
A microcycle is a short cycle of training, usually about one week. A microcycle sets out the individual sessions.
- 5
What happens in the preparation phase of the training year?
Model answer
The performer builds a general fitness base before moving to sport-specific training. Volume is high at first and intensity rises gradually.
- 6
What happens in the competition phase of the training year?
Model answer
The performer maintains fitness and refines skills and tactics. The volume of training falls while intensity stays high.
