Components of Fitness and Methods of Training
Continuous, fartlek, interval and circuit training
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Continuous training and its intensity, fartlek for a footballer, interval training and its variables, high intensity training and Tabata, circuit training for netball, and the base for a 10,000 m runner.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is continuous training?
What intensity is used in continuous training?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is continuous training?
Model answer
Continuous training is steady exercise without rest at a moderate intensity for at least 20 minutes. Running, cycling and swimming are common forms.
- 2
What intensity is used in continuous training?
Model answer
Continuous training is usually performed at about 60 to 80% of maximum heart rate. The performer works in the aerobic training zone.
- 3
Evaluate continuous training for a games player.
Model answer
Continuous training builds aerobic capacity cheaply with little equipment. Continuous training does not copy the stop-start, high-intensity demands of a game.
- 4
What is fartlek training?
Model answer
Fartlek training, meaning speed play, is continuous running with changes of pace and terrain. The performer mixes jogging, striding and sprinting without rest.
- 5
Why does fartlek training suit a football player?
Model answer
Fartlek mixes aerobic running with bursts of anaerobic sprinting, as a match does. The varied pace also keeps sessions interesting.
- 6
What is interval training?
Model answer
Interval training alternates periods of work with periods of rest or light activity. The rest lets the performer work harder than continuous training allows.
