Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is EPOC?

    Model answer

EPOC is excess post-exercise oxygen consumption. It is the oxygen consumed above resting levels during recovery.

  2. 2

What are the two stages of EPOC?

    Model answer

The two stages are the alactic stage and the lactacid stage. They are also called the fast and slow components.

  3. 3

What happens during the alactic stage of EPOC?

    Model answer

Phosphocreatine stores are restored and myoglobin is re-saturated with oxygen. This is the fast replenishment stage.

  4. 4

How long does the alactic stage take?

    Model answer

Phosphocreatine is about half restored in 30 seconds and almost fully restored within about three minutes.

  5. 5

What happens during the lactacid stage of EPOC?

    Model answer

Lactic acid is removed and muscle glycogen stores are restored. This is the slow replenishment stage.

  6. 6

How long does the lactacid stage take?

    Model answer

Lactic acid removal can take an hour or more. Full restoration of glycogen can take a day or longer.
