Performance Analysis and Fitness Testing
Validity, reliability and interpreting test results
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Validity, reliability and relevance, the multi-stage fitness test for a swimmer, improving reliability, motivation, normative tables, comparing with previous results, a worked sit-and-reach improvement, and using results to plan training.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is meant by the reliability of a fitness test?
What is meant by the relevance of a fitness test?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by the validity of a fitness test?
Model answer
A valid test measures what it claims to measure. A sit-and-reach test is a valid measure of hamstring and lower back flexibility.
- 2
What is meant by the reliability of a fitness test?
Model answer
A reliable test gives consistent results when it is repeated under the same conditions. Differences between results then reflect real changes in fitness.
- 3
What is meant by the relevance of a fitness test?
Model answer
A relevant test measures a component that matters in the performer's sport. A sprint test is relevant to a winger but of little use to a golfer.
- 4
Why would the multi-stage fitness test be of limited validity for a swimmer?
Model answer
The test measures aerobic fitness through running, not swimming. A swimmer's aerobic fitness may be underestimated.
- 5
Why might a test be reliable but not valid?
Model answer
A test can give the same result every time while measuring the wrong thing. A handgrip test is reliable but a poor measure of leg strength.
- 6
How can a coach improve the reliability of fitness testing?
Model answer
The coach should follow a standard protocol with the same warm-up and calibrated equipment. The tests should take place at the same time of day with the same tester.
