Newton's laws of motion in sport
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Newton's first, second and third laws with a penalty kick, a sprint start and a swimmer, inertia, ground reaction force and a worked net force calculation.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is inertia?
Apply Newton's first law to a penalty kick.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is Newton's first law of motion?
Model answer
Newton's first law states that a body stays at rest or moves at constant velocity unless an unbalanced force acts on it. The law is also called the law of inertia.
- 2
What is inertia?
Model answer
Inertia is the resistance of a body to a change in its state of motion. The greater the mass, the greater the inertia.
- 3
Apply Newton's first law to a penalty kick.
Model answer
The ball stays still on the spot until the kicker applies a force. The ball then keeps moving until other forces change its motion.
- 4
What is Newton's second law of motion?
Model answer
Newton's second law states that acceleration is proportional to the force applied and occurs in the direction of the force. The law is written as F = ma.
- 5
Apply Newton's second law to a sprinter leaving the blocks.
Model answer
The harder the sprinter pushes against the blocks, the greater the acceleration. The sprinter accelerates in the direction of the net force.
- 6
A 75 kg sprinter accelerates at 4 m s⁻² out of the blocks. What net force acts?
Model answer
The net force is 300 N. The working is 75 kg × 4 m s⁻² = 300 N.

Every question in Biomechanical Principles, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
