Levers and Movement Analysis
Planes and axes of rotation
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
The sagittal, frontal and transverse planes, the longitudinal, transverse and anterior-posterior axes, and the plane and axis of a front somersault, a cartwheel, a discus turn, running and a star jump.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a plane of movement?
What is an axis of rotation?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a plane of movement?
Model answer
A plane is an imaginary flat surface that divides the body. Movement takes place along a plane.
- 2
What is an axis of rotation?
Model answer
An axis is an imaginary line about which the body or a body part turns. Each axis passes at right angles through a plane.
- 3
What is the sagittal plane?
Model answer
The sagittal plane runs vertically from front to back, dividing the body into left and right halves. Flexion and extension take place in this plane.
- 4
What is the frontal plane?
Model answer
The frontal plane runs vertically from side to side, dividing the body into front and back halves. Abduction and adduction take place in this plane.
- 5
What is the horizontal, or transverse, plane?
Model answer
The transverse plane runs horizontally, dividing the body into upper and lower halves. Rotation takes place in this plane.
- 6
What is the longitudinal axis?
Model answer
The longitudinal axis runs vertically from the top of the head to the feet. Movements in the transverse plane turn about this axis.
