Long-Term Adaptations to Exercise
Musculo-skeletal adaptations to training
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Bone density, articular cartilage, ligaments and tendons, muscular hypertrophy, fibre type changes, motor unit recruitment, myoglobin, capillaries and glycogen stores, and the endurance runner and sprinter.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How do ligaments and tendons adapt to training?
How does training affect bone density?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How does training affect bone density?
Model answer
Weight-bearing and resistance exercise increase the deposit of calcium in bone. Denser bones are stronger and less likely to fracture.
- 2
Why does bone density matter for older performers?
Model answer
Bone density falls naturally with age. Regular weight-bearing training slows the loss and reduces the risk of osteoporosis.
- 3
How does regular exercise affect articular cartilage?
Model answer
Regular exercise thickens articular cartilage. Thicker cartilage absorbs shock better and protects the ends of the bones.
- 4
How does mobility training affect ligaments?
Model answer
Mobility training makes ligaments stronger and more pliable. Joints become more stable while keeping a good range of movement.
- 5
How do tendons adapt to resistance training?
Model answer
Resistance training thickens tendons and increases their tensile strength. Thicker tendons transmit greater force from muscle to bone with less risk of injury.
- 6
What is muscular hypertrophy?
Model answer
Muscular hypertrophy is an increase in the cross-sectional area of a muscle. Hypertrophy results from growth in the size of individual muscle fibres.

Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Long-Term Adaptations to Exercise, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
