Welford's and Whiting's information processing models
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Information processing and its sensory input, perception, decision-making and output stages, Welford's and Whiting's models, the display, the translatory and effector mechanisms, and feedback.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What are the main stages of information processing?
What happens at the sensory input stage?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is information processing?
Model answer
Information processing is the way a performer takes in, interprets and responds to information from the environment. Models break the process into stages.
- 2
What are the main stages of information processing?
Model answer
The stages are sensory input, perception, decision making, output and feedback. Memory supports each stage.
- 3
What happens at the sensory input stage?
Model answer
The senses and receptors detect information from the display. Vision, hearing and proprioception are the main senses in sport.
- 4
What happens at the perception stage?
Model answer
Perception interprets the information detected by the senses. The performer makes sense of what is happening.
- 5
What happens at the decision-making stage?
Model answer
The performer selects a response from memory. The chosen motor programme is sent to the muscles.
- 6
What happens at the output stage?
Model answer
The muscles carry out the chosen movement. The response is the observable action.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Information Processing and Memory, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
