Levers and Movement Analysis
Joint movement patterns in sporting actions
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, circumduction and rotation, pronation and supination, plantar flexion and dorsiflexion, lateral flexion, horizontal adduction and abduction, and the press-up and squat.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is extension?
What is abduction?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is flexion?
Model answer
Flexion is a decrease in the angle at a joint. The knee flexes as a sprinter pulls the heel up behind the body.
- 2
What is extension?
Model answer
Extension is an increase in the angle at a joint. The knee extends as a footballer strikes the ball.
- 3
What is abduction?
Model answer
Abduction is movement of a limb away from the midline of the body. The arms abduct as a goalkeeper spreads them to block a shot.
- 4
What is adduction?
Model answer
Adduction is movement of a limb towards the midline of the body. The legs adduct as a breaststroke swimmer squeezes them together in the kick.
- 5
What is circumduction?
Model answer
Circumduction is a circular movement combining flexion, extension, abduction and adduction. The shoulder circumducts in a cricket bowler's arm action.
- 6
What is the difference between pronation and supination?
Model answer
Pronation turns the forearm so the palm faces downwards. Supination turns the forearm so the palm faces upwards.
