- 3 things to know
- A2 1
Overview

Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is on-premises data storage?
Model answer
On-premises storage means data is kept on devices the business owns at its own site. Internal hard drives, external drives and office servers are examples.
- 2
How do hard disk drives differ from solid-state drives?
Model answer
A hard disk drive stores data on spinning magnetic platters and is cheaper per gigabyte. A solid-state drive uses flash memory with no moving parts, so it is faster and more robust.
- 3
What is network-attached storage (NAS)?
Model answer
NAS is a storage device connected to an office network that several users can share. NAS gives central on-premises storage without a full server.
- 4
Evaluate external hard drives for storing a small consultancy's data.
Model answer
External drives are cheap, portable and give fast access with no internet needed. External drives are easily lost, stolen or damaged. External drives suit backups but need encryption and off-site storage.
- 5
What is a data centre?
Model answer
A data centre is a secure building housing large numbers of servers, storage systems and network equipment. The centre provides reliable power, cooling and physical security.
- 6
How can a business use a data centre without building its own?
Model answer
A business can rent space for its own servers in a shared data centre, known as colocation. A business can also rent servers owned by the data centre operator.
