Overview
Random, stratified and quota sampling for workplace research with a worked stratified sample, reliability and validity, informed consent, confidentiality, data protection and response rates.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why might a researcher use random sampling for a firm-wide staff survey?
Why is stratified sampling suited to a firm with several departments of different sizes?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a sample in business research?
Model answer
A sample is the group of people selected to take part from the whole population being studied. A good sample represents the population fairly.
- 2
Why might a researcher use random sampling for a firm-wide staff survey?
Model answer
Random sampling gives every employee an equal chance of being chosen, so the researcher's own preferences cannot bias the sample. A computer can draw names from the staff list.
- 3
Why is stratified sampling suited to a firm with several departments of different sizes?
Model answer
Stratified sampling includes each department in proportion to its size. Small departments are not missed and large ones do not dominate the results.
- 4
When would a researcher choose quota sampling for workplace research?
Model answer
Quota sampling suits research that needs views from set groups quickly, such as 20 managers and 30 administrators. Quota sampling is faster than drawing a random sample from a full staff list.
- 5
A firm has 200 staff: 120 administrators and 80 professionals. How many of each should a stratified sample of 50 include?
Model answer
The sample should include 30 administrators and 20 professionals. The working is 120 ÷ 200 × 50 = 30 and 80 ÷ 200 × 50 = 20.
- 6
How does quota sampling differ from stratified sampling?
Model answer
Stratified sampling selects randomly within each group. Quota sampling lets the researcher choose who fills each group, which can introduce bias.
