Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is influence in a business setting?
Model answer
Influence is the ability to shape other people's decisions and behaviour. A person with influence may have no formal authority over those they affect.
- 2
How does influencing differ from persuading?
Model answer
Persuasion aims to win agreement to a particular proposal at one point in time. Influence is broader and builds lasting sway through credibility, relationships and example.
- 3
Why must a consultant influence people without formal authority?
Model answer
A consultant cannot instruct a client's staff to change the way they work. Change happens only if the consultant wins support from managers and employees.
- 4
Name three sources of a consultant's influence over a client.
Model answer
A consultant draws influence from expert knowledge, a strong professional reputation and trusted relationships. Each source makes the client more likely to act on the advice.
- 5
Which bases of power did French and Raven identify?
Model answer
John French and Bertram Raven identified legitimate, reward, coercive, expert and referent power in 1959. A consultant relies mainly on expert and referent power.
- 6
Define expert power.
Model answer
Expert power is influence that comes from specialist knowledge that others lack. A tax adviser's recommendations carry weight because the client cannot match that expertise.
