Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Why do market researchers use a sample?

    Model answer

Surveying every member of a market is usually too costly and slow. A sample is a smaller group chosen to represent the whole population.

  2. 2

What is a population in market research?

    Model answer

The population is the whole group a researcher wants to find out about. The population might be every small business in County Down.

  3. 3

How is a random sample of a client's customers chosen?

    Model answer

Every customer on the client's list is given an equal chance of selection, for example by a computer draw. The researcher has no say in who is picked.

  4. 4

Why might random sampling fail to represent a client's market?

    Model answer

A random sample can under-represent small but important groups by chance. Random sampling also needs a complete list of the population, which rarely exists for a consumer market.

  5. 5

How would a consultancy carry out quota sampling in a Belfast shopping centre survey?

    Model answer

Interviewers are given quotas, such as 40 men and 40 women in set age bands. Interviewers stop shoppers who fit the quotas until every quota is filled.

  6. 6

Why can quota sampling give biased market research results?

    Model answer

Interviewers choose who fills each quota, so they may approach friendly-looking or easily reached people. Shoppers in one place at one time may not represent the whole market.
