What is a code of conduct?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a code of conduct?
Model answer
A code of conduct is a set of rules describing how members of an organisation or industry should behave. The rules are usually drawn up by the firm or industry itself.
- 2
How does a code of conduct differ from a code of ethics?
Model answer
A code of ethics states broad values, such as honesty and fairness. A code of conduct turns those values into specific rules of behaviour.
- 3
What is external regulation?
Model answer
External regulation is control imposed on a business from outside, usually by government or a statutory regulator. The rules are backed by law and penalties.
- 4
Define self-regulation.
Model answer
Self-regulation is where an industry or profession sets and polices its own standards. Government does not impose the rules directly.
- 5
Give an example of an industry code of conduct in the UK.
Model answer
The CAP Code sets the rules for non-broadcast advertising in the UK. The Advertising Standards Authority, funded by the advertising industry, enforces it.
- 6
What are the benefits to a client's business of following a code of conduct rather than relying on external regulation?
Model answer
A code can be tailored to the business and updated quickly as conditions change. A code is also cheaper to run than a system of external inspection.
