SSL, HTTPS and two-factor authentication
- 3 things to know
- A2 1
Overview
SSL, now TLS, certificates and HTTPS, their limits, two-factor authentication and authentication factors, securing email and cloud services, and tokenisation.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Evaluate 2FA for staff logins at a Belfast law firm.
What is SSL?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is SSL?
Model answer
Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is a protocol that encrypts data travelling between a browser and a web server. SSL has been replaced by the stronger Transport Layer Security (TLS), but the name SSL is still widely used.
- 2
What is an SSL certificate?
Model answer
An SSL certificate is a digital file, issued by a certificate authority, that confirms a website's identity. The certificate also allows an encrypted connection to be set up.
- 3
What is HTTPS?
Model answer
Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) is the secure version of the protocol used to load web pages. HTTPS uses SSL or TLS encryption to protect data in transit.
- 4
Why does HTTPS matter for a firm's client portal?
Model answer
HTTPS encrypts logins and documents as they travel, so an eavesdropper cannot read them. HTTPS also confirms that clients are connected to the genuine site.
- 5
What are the limits of HTTPS?
Model answer
HTTPS protects data only while it is travelling, not once it is stored. A fraudulent website can also use HTTPS, so the padlock symbol does not prove honesty.
- 6
Evaluate HTTPS for a Lisburn estate agent's website that takes online enquiries.
Model answer
HTTPS protects enquiry details and builds visitor trust, and browsers warn users away from sites without it. Certificates are cheap or free, so the cost is low. HTTPS does not protect stored data, so other controls are still needed.
