Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is an internal source of finance?
Model answer
An internal source of finance comes from within the business itself. Retained profit, the owner's capital and the sale of assets are examples.
- 2
What is retained profit?
Model answer
Retained profit is the profit kept in the business after tax and payments to its owners. Retained profit can be reinvested to fund growth.
- 3
Give two advantages of retained profit as a source of finance.
Model answer
Retained profit carries no interest and never has to be repaid. Retained profit also leaves ownership and control unchanged.
- 4
Give two disadvantages of retained profit as a source of finance.
Model answer
A new or loss-making business has little or no retained profit to use. The owners receive less in drawings or dividends when profit is kept back.
- 5
The owner of a Banbridge bookkeeping firm made net profit of £52,000 and took drawings of £38,000. How much profit was retained?
Model answer
The firm retained £14,000 of profit. The working is £52,000 − £38,000 = £14,000.
- 6
What is meant by owner's capital as a source of finance?
Model answer
Owner's capital is money the owner puts into the business, often from personal savings. A sole trader starting a payroll bureau might invest £10,000 of savings.
