Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the nature and purpose of franchising?
Model answer
Franchising is an arrangement in which one business sells others the right to trade under its brand. The purpose is growth financed by the franchisee rather than by the brand owner.
- 2
Who is the franchisor?
Model answer
The franchisor is the business that owns the brand and the business format. The franchisor grants others the right to trade under that name.
- 3
Who is the franchisee?
Model answer
The franchisee is the person or business buying the right to trade under the brand. The franchisee supplies the capital and runs the outlet.
- 4
What payments does a franchisee usually make?
Model answer
A franchisee pays an initial fee to join the network. An ongoing royalty, normally a percentage of turnover, is paid afterwards.
- 5
How does franchising let a business grow quickly?
Model answer
Each new outlet is financed by the franchisee rather than by the brand owner. Expansion is therefore limited by demand for franchises rather than by capital.
- 6
State two advantages of franchising for the franchisor.
Model answer
Rapid expansion is achieved with very little capital of the franchisor's own. Franchisees running their own money-making outlets are highly motivated.
