Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by economic growth?
Model answer
Economic growth is an increase in the total output of goods and services produced by an economy. Growth is normally measured as the percentage change in real gross domestic product.
- 2
What is gross domestic product?
Model answer
Gross domestic product is the total value of the goods and services produced within a country in a period. GDP figures for the United Kingdom are published by the Office for National Statistics.
- 3
Distinguish between real and nominal GDP.
Model answer
Nominal GDP measures output at current prices, so the figure rises when prices rise. Real GDP is adjusted for inflation and therefore shows the change in output alone.
- 4
Why is GDP per capita often used instead of total GDP?
Model answer
GDP per capita divides total output by the population to give output per person. Comparisons of living standards between countries of different size then become meaningful.
- 5
What is the business cycle?
Model answer
The business cycle is the pattern of fluctuation in national output around its long-term trend. The cycle repeats, but the length and depth of each phase vary.
- 6
Name the four phases of the business cycle.
Model answer
The four phases are boom, downturn, recession and recovery. Output rises during a boom and a recovery and falls during a downturn and a recession.
